Antique 19th century carved oak hall bench in the French Renaissance revival manner, a large and impressive box settle of excellent quality, showcasing fine hand-carved decoration throughout.
The upholstered seat lifts to reveal a deep storage compartment within the base, ideal for shoes, blankets or throws, while the high back and generous scrolled arms make it a comfortable and practical seat.
The front is carved with four panels, each centred by a roundel with a helmeted warrior's head in profile within scrolling foliage. The sides have carved floral panels, the arms are carved with acanthus leaves and end in bold scrolls, and the back is framed by two galleries of turned spindles and carved borders, all standing on a carved moulded plinth with bun feet.
The oak has a rich, dark colour and an attractive patina, and the back and seat are upholstered in a pale blue damask with a scrolling pattern.
Presented in good condition, it is a very desirable statement piece, a perfect addition to any hallway, landing, kitchen or period interior.
