Antique 19th century Victorian music cabinet in burr walnut, a charming and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and a wonderful period character.
The cabinet is enclosed by a single glazed door with its lock and key, opening to reveal four shelves, each fronted with gilt-tooled leather edging titled Dance, Sacred, Opera and Songs, a lovely original feature for storing sheet music, books or displaying treasured pieces.
The top and door surround are finished in beautifully figured burr walnut veneers with boxwood stringing and crossbanded edges, while the sides are veneered in well-figured walnut with inlaid line panels. A pierced brass gallery runs along the back edge of the top, cast brass carrying handles are fitted to each side, and the cabinet stands on a shaped plinth base with canted front corners.
The burr walnut displays a striking, swirling figure and a warm, rich colour with a lovely aged patina, set off nicely by the paler stringing.
Of neat, compact proportions, it is presented in good condition. A very desirable Victorian piece, perfect for a drawing room, music room, hallway or study.
