Antique 19th century Victorian side table in carved oak, made in the Jacobean Revival manner, a handsome and characterful piece of good quality, showcasing fine hand-carved craftsmanship.
It is fitted with a single full-width frieze drawer, carved to the front with a row of shell lunettes and centred by a carved green man mask, which doubles as the handle. Beneath the drawer is a useful undertier shelf, and at a comfortable height it also works well as a writing table or console.
The top is raised with a carved upstand to the back, decorated with scrolling foliage. The frieze is flanked by carved rosette blocks, the sides are carved with further shell lunettes, and a shaped carved apron sits beneath the drawer. It stands on four boldly carved cup-and-cover baluster legs joined by the platform undertier with a shaped apron, raised on turned bun feet.
The oak displays an attractive figured grain and a deep, rich dark colour with a lovely aged patina.
Presented in good condition, a very desirable and decorative piece, perfect addition to any hallway, study or living room.
